One thing that I absolutely love about Instagram is all of the many food accounts! Right now, my favorite foodie account is Eat With Eck! She posts the cutest pictures of food around the Houston area and her account is great to look at if you want to visit a cute restaurant with a friend.
From my food blogger and popular YouTube accounts, I found a few trends that people all over the country are raving about. Here’s the list of some food trends that I’ve tried recently and small reviews –
Whole Foods Mochi Ice Cream (Whole Foods – San Antonio)
Rating: 3.5 /5
This trend was all over Twitter! I have always been an avid mochi ice cream eater my whole life, so I like to think I have a sort of expertise in which ones taste good and which ones don’t. I really did enjoy the ones I tried – strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, and matcha. The dough was very creamy and the ice cream was just phenomenal on the inside. The only downfall of Whole Food’s mochi ice cream, which you may have assumed, was the price. They were $2 per mochi and normally I would each mochi ice cream that was half that price. You can fit four of those little balls in your hand so I don’t think it was worth the price.
Acai Bowls (Zeke’s Beans & Bowls – Virginia Beach)
Kekoa and I frequent Zeke’s all the time when I visit Virginia. I am very glad acai bowls are a trend because they are one of my favorite breakfast meals and snacks. My favorite acai blends are the ones that contain coconut and mango. This acai bowl, in particular, has the perfect balance of crunchy, sweet, and fresh. Zeke’s is pricey and averages about the price of a meal but I will for sure spend money on this bowl anytime.
Korean BBQ Fries or Bulgogi Fries (OhMyGogi – Rice Village / Houston)
My friends are probably going to read this and yell at me but honestly, I feel like bulgogi fries are a bit greasy and too intense for me. It’s kind of like eating chocolate filled deep fried Oreos. It’s just a lot of rich flavors. I do like this food truck’s gogi and I love their fries – just not together!
Sushi Burritos (Tail & Fin – Las Vegas)
Sushi burritos are popping up all over the place in Houston. The one I tried was a new business in Las Vegas and I feel like I fell in love with the concept more than the food. Again, I like sushi and I like burritos. I’m not a fan of them together. Rice is so heavy so when it is the base of this burrito, you end up super full without wanting to be. This is definitely a great filling stop for vegetarians.
Creative Flavored Donuts (Donutlicious – Spring / Houston)
I truly am not a fan of donuts but I was definitely surprised with Donutlicious. The beautiful baby at the top right was honestly one of the best donuts I have never had. I am such a plain Jane with donuts but this experience definitely makes me want to try more creative flavors next time!
Ramen (Jinya – Midtown / Houston)
BEST RAMEN OF MY LIFE! This is one of me and Kekoa’s favorite dinner spot when we’re feeling fancy and celebrating a special occasion. Jinya is actually a meat market during the day and turns into a beautiful ramen joint at night. I’ve always been used to Saimin, which is Hawaii’s fancy Top Ramen but I didn’t try Ramen until the night I said yes to dating the love of my life! Definitely, a trend to try!
Rolled Ice Cream (8 Below – Norfolk)
I love the concept of rolled ice cream! I’ve been to different places and I love the fact that the workers mix fresh fruit or other ingredients into the ice cream AND on top. This makes the dessert super freshly made and I absolutely love fruit on top of ice cream!
